The Greater San Fransisco Area

Continuing my quest to travel the world.

It has been my quest to cycle around the world for a very long time, although I have ticked off 16 countries to date, I still haven't achieved the ultimate goal of cycling the world. I cannot wait any longer for the conditions to be perfect, age is catching up with me, so it is now or never.

Stressful week.

It's been  a stressful week.My poor wee cat - Bobby has been badly injured and might loose his leg. Just to clarify to those that don't know - bobby is my child substitute, I adore him and he adores me back. Therefore my heart is breaking seeing him in such distress.

He didn't turn up one morning and I went looking for him. I heard his distressed miaow in the kiwifruit orchard we live in. I found him on top of the vines, with his leg caught in some wire, and in his efforts to escape he had twisted it so tight it had cut right into his leg. When he saw me he tried to jump into my arms and was hanging from his leg and screaming in pain. I put him back up on the branch and ran to get some wire cutters.

Bobby's sprained and lacerated leg.

As you should all know as I have mentioned it more than once, we don't have a car. So the poor wee boy had to endure a trip on the back of the bike trailer to get to the vet. I have never loathed cars and trucks more in my life. The roar of the traffic nearly gave him heart failure and he wet himself in fright. The vet gave him painkillers, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and he had an X-ray to check for broken bones. It was determined that he had a severely sprained leg, and lacerations but will be fine in a few days. The next day his leg swelled up to three times the size of his other legs. I kept giving him his anti-inflammatories and waited for the swelling to go down.

Cat on board.

Just to complicate matters, it was a long weekend - New Zealand Day, well it's actually called Waitangi Day. Waitangi being the place that the colonial fore fathers signed a treaty with the Maori people to stop waring each other, to respect each other and to move forward as a united country. The day is characterised by Maori protests about whatever grievance is most in their minds at the time. A lot of these protests are relevant and have a good point, but it would be nice to have a day for New Zealanders that was joyful and happy. Anyway, the cat got worse and the vets was closed for the long weekend.

Last night there was a dead animal smell coming from the cat, it was so strong it woke me up, and I couldn't get back to sleep. The Vets are open again so off he went, this time on the vespa, it's just as frightening for him but it takes a third of the time to get there.

notice the swollen rear paw.

In four days his leg has gone from sprained to so infected it is possibly Gangrene. If the Vet can't get rid of the infection he may loose his leg. Niel is really stressed about going away for 7 -8 months with all this happening, The stress of the trip is bad enough without throwing this into the mix.

The latest news from the vet is that the rapid and extreme infection is from the Kiwifruit vines themselves. There is a notice on the gate saying PSA infection keep out, and that is probably whats infected our cat. So much for living in the peaceful country side where life is idyllic and quiet.
